Ancient humans may have paused in Arabia for 30,000 years on their way out of AfricaGenetic evidence reveals a long, previously unknown period of adaptation to cold climates in the history of ancient human migrations across the globe.theconversation.comDNA Suggests Modern Humans Emerged From Several Groups in Africa, Not OneScientists used computer modeling and the genomes of several hundred living people to examine our prehistoric originswww.smithsonianmag.comHomo erectus | Why Did the Most Successful Early Human Go Extinct?Homo erectus | Why Did the Most Successful Early Human Go Extinct? The Ancients host Tristan Hughes sits down with Professor John Mcnabb at the University of Southampton to discuss the extinct species of archaic human, Homo Erectus (aka the 'Upright Man') that existed about 2 million years ago. Were these ancient ancestors the first to make stone tools? Were they the first to create fires? How did they hunt? How similar were they to Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens? Why did they go extinct? Tristan and John cover all of this ground as well as touching upon another species of human that lived on the remote islands of Indonesia, Homo Floresiensis, otherwise known as 'The Hobbit' due to its small structure and features. Here we report the discovery of a late Neanderthal individual, nicknamed Thorin, from Grotte Mandrin in Mediterranean France, and his genome. These dentognathic fossils, including a rare example of distomolars, are associated with a rich archeological record of their final technological traditions in this region ~50-42 thousand years ago. Thorin's genome reveals a deep divergence with other late Neanderthals. Thorin belonged to a population with small group size that showed no genetic introgression with other known late European Neanderthals, revealing genetic isolation of his lineage despite them living in neighboring regions. These results have important implications for resolving competing hypotheses about causes of the Neanderthals' disappearance. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.www.biorxiv.orgBlack Holes Will Destroy All Quantum States, Researchers Argue | Quanta MagazineNew calculations suggest that the event horizons around black holes will ‘decohere’ quantum possibilities — even those that are far away.www.quantamagazine.orgHow to Think About Relativity’s Concept of Space-Time | Quanta MagazineAlbert Einstein’s ideas about space-time aren’t exactly intuitive, and they aren’t exactly Einstein’s, either.www.quantamagazine.orgWe're all Wittgensteinians nowThe philosophical winners from LLMswww.secondbest.caGPT-4: The Bitterer LessonSomething to think aboutthealgorithmicbridge.substack.comCould Neanderthals Speak?Could Neanderthals Speak like Modern Humans? The concept is a thought experiment that attempts to imagine how a spacefaring civilization would meet its energy requirements once those requirements exceed what can be generated from the home planet's resources alone. Because only a tiny fraction of a star's energy emissions reaches the surface of any orbiting planet, building structures encircling a star would enable a civilization to harvest far more energy.en.m.wikipedia.orgKardashev scaleThe Kardashev scale (Russian: Шкала Кардашева, Shkala Kardasheva) is a method of measuring a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use.
